I Want to start my own martial art style, what are the legal requirements?

I Only want to start the style in 2008 or later.

I Want to start my own martial art style, what are the legal requirements?
If you want to start a business of any sort, you should talk to a solicitor/attorney about the legal requirements and implications in the place where you want to establish your business.

If you want to start your own martial art style then, in my opinion, if you want to get any sort of community support, you will need to establish communications with other people in the martial arts and get some professional recognition in order to establish the LEGITIMACY of your new style.

.
Reply:Well, usually you have to be a professional master at it. Most were passed down from generations.
Reply:Assuming you%26#039;re from the United States, there actually isn%26#039;t a legal requirement unless you start to make up certifications acquired (ie saying you acquired a 10th degree black belt from School X, because that would be fraud). The only thing you have to be certain of is that it is a legit style.

There are some %26quot;strange%26quot; laws around the country which are usually city ordinances. You can find these here: http://www.loyola.edu/maru/laws.html

At most you just have to be sure you are not teaching garbage because if anything you have to be recognized as being for real by your peers.
Reply:Well be able to accept being laughed at by everybody and live in frustation and humilitation are partof requirements.
Reply:There are no laws regulating that kind of thing that I am aware of, although if you teach people unsafe things, you may open yourself up for lawsuits.

Normally, starting a style means studying more than one style with dedication, for many years, and then use a combination of what you%26#039;ve learned to do something new.

Starting your own style from scratch is a little like saying you%26#039;re going to invent music without paying any attention to what%26#039;s been done in music in the last couple of thousand years. You can do it, but I doubt it will sound very good.
Reply:Your not going to invent something that has not already been done. The foundations of fighting have existed since beyond history and there have always been people training to defend themselves. New arts are either from someone who doesn%26#039;t want to spend the time to real dig into an existing one, someone who thinks they have found something new or someone who is trying to combine several arts together. Piece of advise, learn one for about 30 years then come back with this thread and try again.
Reply:Uh NONE as long as you don%26#039;t use someone else%26#039;s trademarks or patented stuff.
Reply:In the US there are no legal restrictions. There are however ethical considerations if you claim credentials that you have not really earned.
Reply:The first requirement is you must be humble. Go to a martial arts magazine and get them to do an article on you and your new martial art. After that put out three volumes of DVDs, and T-shirts are also a good idea. Calendars, action figures, and coffe mugs are also good for the gulible. An annual seminar is good. Finding a niche is essential. The winning race horse is only perhaps three seconds faster but worth a lot more money, so have a reason why your%26#039;s is best! Know your product so that you can tell people why it is the best for: warding off jihad terrorists, protecting society against a college student etc. Martial Arts are often shrouded in mysticism, making it okay to remain a little bit mysterious, so anything you don%26#039;t know the answer to you can answer with %26quot;when it is time for you to know you will have answer grasshopper.%26quot; You must have insurance. I would recommend you wait until much later than 2008, but whenever you feel ready the world is ready.
Reply:for the most part, the way that most people form new martial arts styles is by being a master at a different one (in this case we%26#039;ll use Tae Kwon Do) once you%26#039;re a master at the form, you start to add this flash or that flash to make it your own.

it sounds weird, but thats how it%26#039;s done. sometimes the %26#039;flashes%26#039; are based off of some type of inspiration, for example, Hip Hop. so really the master Teaching TangSoDokuSaite down the street is really a Karate master that had a few moves that he created that weren%26#039;t catagorized in Karate.
Reply:My first guess is that if you have to ask questions like this, you aren%26#039;t ready.
Reply:Around here it is about five martial arts lessons (preferably in five different styles), two sets of gloves, and a mail-order certificate from someone advertising in the back of a martial arts magazine. Knowledge; not a prerequisite.
